Lately there have been lots of advertisements for “back to
school” sales. It is that time of year again. As we prepare our
children to return to school so that they may have a quality
education, so we also are preparing in our parish to provide all
parishioners with quality faith formation.

Faith Formation begins at baptism. Parents who present their
children for baptism make sacred promises to teach their children
to know, love, and serve God. This involves a daily commitment
to family prayer, a family commitment to Sunday Mass and the
sacramental life of the Church, and a family commitment to
deepen in knowledge of our Catholic faith. Children learn this
best through the good example of parents. When parents are
attentive to their own faith formation, then children are caught up
in the same priority and are well formed as Christians and as good
human beings.
We have many such good examples in our parish
One of the sad stories played out over and over in the parish is
those families who are not attentive to faith formation. Parents
who do not bring their children to Sunday CCD on a regular basis,
who do not attend Mass faithfully each Sunday, who do not make
a regular practice of the Sacrament of Penance, and who do not
value prayer and study in the home, bring up children who are
ignorant of their faith and who do not practice the faith. Those
who are ignorant of our Catholic faith usually end up falling away
from the faith. The seed that is sown bears its own fruit.

The Lord calls us to become his Saints. One of the clear paths
to becoming a saint is through knowledge of our faith. When our
knowledge of the faith expands, our thinking changes. When our
thinking changes, our lives are transformed. When our lives are
transformed, then we become the “salt of the earth” and the “light
of the world” that Jesus wants us to be. This is our cooperatio
n
with the Grace of God, who wants to fill the earth with His divine
revelation.

This is a clear call to all members of our parish.

? Children K-6: Parents – please enroll your children in faith
formation and be consistent with their attendance.
? Youth 7-8: Parents – please enroll your youth in
Confirmation Preparation and be consistent with their
attendance.
? Youth 9-12: Parents – please bring your youth to youth
ministry meetings either on Sunday evenings or Wednesday
evenings. Be consistent with attendance at meetings and
retreats.
? Young Adults: If away at school, get involved in a good
campus ministry program that is faithful to Church Teaching.
Here at the parish, make plans to participate in our young
adult ministries.
? Adults: Make your personal plan for your ongoing faith
formation. Read good books, listen to good CD’s, attend
faith formation classes for adults here in the parish. Parents –
plan to attend parent meetings.
Let us make this a year of renewed commitment to personal
faith formation so that the Lord may find us ready to greet Him
when He comes.
